Part 8: Between Fear and Faith, We Found Freedom
July always hits different.
There's something about this month — the heat, the fireflies, the smell of the earth after a summer rain — that makes you stop and take stock of where you are. Independence Day comes and goes with its fireworks and flags, but the real independence? That one sneaks up on you quietly. You don't notice it until one ordinary Tuesday in July when you realize: this is actually our life now.
Three years ago, we couldn't have told you exactly what WestLand Farms would become. We had a vision — something about living closer to the land, providing a place of wellness, making things with our hands, building something that was ours — but the details were fuzzy. The path wasn't straight and we had a lot to overcome.
What we knew was this: we were done waiting for permission.
The First July
That first summer was humbling in the best and hardest ways. We were learning everything at once — which plants to harvest and when, how to render a salve that actually held together, how to talk about what we were making without sounding like we were trying too hard. We made mistakes. We made batches that didn't work. We made a lot of things we never sold.
But we also made something else: momentum. Small, stubborn, quiet momentum.
The Leap Nobody Talks About
Here's the part people don't always hear: we had moments where we were terrified.
Quitting your job, selling your belongings, putting your house on the market — none of that feels brave in the moment. It feels scary and reckless. It feels like standing at the edge of something with no guarantee of a soft landing. We had each other, a vision, and fear and faith that hung together intertwined.
But we've come to believe that freedom doesn't come from being fearless. It comes from moving forward anyway, when every sensible voice in your head is telling you to stay put. Faith isn't the absence of fear. It's the quiet thing underneath it — the part that keeps your feet moving when your mind is screaming to turn back. The fear doesn't go away. You just stop letting it make the decisions. You let faith do that instead.
Heading out into that unknown was the hardest thing we ever did. It was also the best.
Three Julys Later
This July, we're stewarding our land. We're filling orders for people who've been with us since the beginning — and people who just found us last week. We're still a small operation. We still do this by hand. And we wouldn't have it any other way.
The independence we celebrate this month isn't just the national kind. It's the kind that comes from building something real — from knowing that what you put into a jar came from your own land, your own hands, your own stubborn belief that it mattered.
It does matter. You've reminded us of that, over and over.
What's Next
We're heading into the second half of the year with new products in the works, more harvests ahead, and the same commitment we started with: small batches, made carefully right here on our farm.
Thank you for being part of this. Three years in, we're just getting started. Dream big. The resources will come.
