Fresh green beans in bowls ready for canning

Part 9: The Best Kind of Saturday Night

It was 7 o'clock on a Saturday night, and we were elbow-deep in green beans.

Twenty-four pounds of them, to be exact. Jars lined up on the counter, two canners humming on the stove, the two of us moving around each other in that easy way you only learn after years of sharing a kitchen. Most people, I imagine, would not call this a perfect Saturday night. Most people would call it work. Maybe even boring.

We call it everything.

Since we moved here — to this land, this slower pace, this life we built on purpose, something has shifted in us. The noise that used to fill every corner of our days has gone quiet. And in that quiet, we found something we didn't know we'd been missing: peace.

Amy told me once that when she was younger, she confused peace with boredom. That stillness felt like something was wrong. I think a lot of us carry that belief without even knowing it. That if things aren't loud and busy and full, we must not be living right.

We don't believe that anymore.

We've made hard decisions to get here. Set boundaries that were uncomfortable at first. Let go of relationships that cost us more than they gave. Stopped giving weight to what other people think of us, because our worth was never theirs to measure. None of that was simple. But it was all in service of one thing: protecting the peace we'd worked so hard to find.

Now our Saturday nights look like this. Green beans and mason jars. Dogs underfoot. Good conversation that goes nowhere in particular and everywhere that matters. Books. Cooking. The particular satisfaction of doing something with your hands that will feed you later.

Simple doesn't mean small. It doesn't mean our dreams have shrunk or our ambitions have faded. It means we've closed the door to the noise so we can actually hear ourselves think — so we can grow something real, one salve at a time, one harvest at a time, one quiet Saturday night at a time.

Dream big. The resources will come.
